Cyanobacteria Moving About A Collection Of Mosquito Eggs.

Euglena Gracilis Single Celled Organism Microscopic Scene

Euglena as seen under my microscope from a larger field view and then close up as it slides around in a drop of water swinging its flagellum out in front.

Euglena is a genus of unicellular flagellate protists. It is the best known and most widely studied member of the phylum Euglenozoa (also known as Euglenophyta), a diverse group containing some 44 genera and at least 800 species. Species of Euglena are found in fresh and salt waters. They are often abundant in quiet, inland waters, where they may bloom in numbers sufficient to color the surface of ponds and ditches green (E. viridis) or red (E. sanguinea).

The species Euglena gracilis, has been used extensively in the laboratory as a model organism.

Most species of Euglena have photosynthesizing chloroplasts within the body of the cell, which enable them to feed by autotrophy, like plants. However, they can also take nourishment heterotrophically, like animals. Since Euglena have features of both animals and plants, early taxonomists, working within the Linnaean two-kingdom system of biological classification, found them difficult to classify. Indeed, it was the question of where to put such "unclassifiable" creatures that prompted Ernst Haeckel to add a third kingdom to the Animale and Vegetabile of Linnaeus: the Kingdom Protista.

Diatom Microscopic Life Under Microscope

A Diatom microorganism under my microscope twitching. The silica cell wall and the dividing line in the middle. This specimen came from a puddle in my back yard.

Diatoms are a major group of algae, and are one of the most common types of phytoplankton. Most diatoms are unicellular, although they can exist as colonies in the shape of filaments or ribbons (e.g. Fragilaria), fans (e.g. Meridion), zigzags (e.g. Tabellaria), or stellate colonies (e.g. Asterionella). Diatoms are producers within the food chain. A characteristic feature of diatom cells is that they are encased within a unique cell wall made of silica (hydrated silicon dioxide) called a frustule. These frustules show a wide diversity in form, but usually consist of two asymmetrical sides with a split between them, hence the group name. Fossil evidence suggests that they originated during, or before, the early Jurassic Period. Diatom communities are a popular tool for monitoring environmental conditions, past and present, and are commonly used in studies of water quality. Some diatoms are capable of movement via flagellation.

The King and the Jester (1907) Georges Méliès

This silent film era film was released in France by creator/director Georges Méliès in 1907.

In the film a jester attempts to make the king smile and laugh. He tries falling down several times, juggling, making a tower of chairs and blowing them down. The king isn't impressed and gives the jester the boot but as he goes off screen he reappears coming out of one of his boxes.

The king gives him another chance and the jester brings in the queen. He performs a bit of magic making her clothing change to to those of an Egyptian, possibly Cleopatra then he has her balanced on two poles by her hands and then amazingly one pole. The king is uninterested in the magic but sits with the queen and gives her a kiss. The jester disappears and after the kiss the king realizes that the queen has disappeared and in her place is the jester! At first he scowls but after a moment is amused. He walks off screen with the jester.

Toward the end this film due to age has suffered a bit. For the most part you can see what is happening but it appears as though parts of the film were partially burned.

This film was released in France under the french name, "L'araignée d'or," and directed by Segundo de Chomón. The film was tinted / hand-colored at the time. The film is rather unusual film.

The story is of a man who follows four cloaked, bearded Gnomes through the forest and sees them find a gold spider. Out of curiosity he follows them back to their cave home where he sees the golden spider spin a web that changes into gold coins.

After the Gnomes leave he goes into the cave and sees several large glass jars. In one is a fly constructing little tables, another a fly drawing and painting a pictures and another an ant making a butterfly out of fabric pieces. The man steals the gold spider and takes it back to his home where it spins him gold coins.

After a little while someone comes by his home, possibly looking for the spider, he looks out and wants them to leave which they do. But after returning to his table the spider is gone and his gold coins turn into scorpions. The Gnomes appear to him in a vision. Which I assume is to let him know they knew he took it and this is his punishment.

A Song For Azetta (and those who miss her)

Buy the song on I-tunes at:http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/azetta/id514589356
Read more about this song/video below.

As I release this song and music video know personally that Azetta would probably never have listened to this type of music. I actually have no recollections of ever hearing her listen to music, possibly it was simply too far past the time that she did so. But this is more about myself and the song represents my feelings and how I've felt from her passing. A way of keeping her memory alive and paying tribute to her. I only hope as she looks down from heaven that she can be proud of me even if the song may not necessarily be her cup of tea.

As many may realize the video uses scenes from the silent film, "The Little Matchseller," which was filmed in 1902 by James Williamson based on the book by Hans Christian Andersen.

"Grandmother," cried the little one, "O take me with you; I know you will go away when the match burns out; you will vanish like the warm stove, the roast goose, and the large, glorious Christmas-tree." And she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother there. And the matches glowed with a light that was brighter than the noon-day, and her grandmother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in brightness and joy far above the earth, where there was neither cold nor hunger nor pain, for they were with God.

That excerpt more than anything makes me remember Azetta, and I always will.

It follows an incredible dream of a waiter, he sees several evil looking faces and other oddities. Alcohol and Absinthe are mentioned, possibly this is to illustrate the ill effects or hallucinations that accompany substance abuse. Very unusual film for the era but very entertaining.
